User growth continued, reaching 20 million total active users, including five million paying customers globally and one million paying customers in the United States, in December 2012. The feature was rolled out to a small number of US-based artists by invitation only. In September 2018, Spotify announced “Upload Beta”, allowing artists to upload directly to the platform instead of going through a distributor or record label.
